The National Leadership Council's (NLC's) Inclusion team and the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement's Breaking Through (BT) team have now come together to form the Leadership for Equality (L4E) workstream for the new NHS Leadership Academy.

The L4E strategy builds on BT and NLC's Inclusion strategy to focus on:

  • Building Inclusion into the architecture
  • Building the talent pipeline
  • Strengethening accountability - support Equality Diversity Council (EDC) to implement the Equality Diversity System (EDS)
  • Address and develop senior leadership capability in inclusion and diversity
  • Retaining existing diversity through transition
  • Build NHS capability to develop different leaders

"Today’s NHS has a responsibility to fully reflect the population it serves. I am fully committed to ensuring there are people from diverse backgrounds at all levels of the service but particularly in more senior positions where representation is poor."
David Nicholson, NHS Chief Executive
