The NHS Institute closed on 31 March 2013. This website is being maintained until the end of June 2013 so that registered users can download documents and view videos (but webinars are no longer available). Once this website is closed you'll be able to see all publicly available content on The National Archives website: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/*/http://institute.nhs.uk.

Please note that from May 1st 2013 the ability to order our hard copy materials will be temporarily suspended as we finalise the closedown of the NHS Institute and complete the transition to NHS Improving Quality (part of NHS England). It will still be possible to download publications until this website closes, which is projected to be at the end of June 2013. It is currently anticipated that many of the materials will be passed onto NHS England and should become available again later this year.

Further messages on its future will be posted here over the coming weeks.

Healthy Places, Healthy LivesHealthy Places, Healthy Lives is a partnership programme which helps to reduce health inequalities and improve population health.

Delivery of the programme enables the accelerated take up and learning from experience, best practice and improvement science to influence commissioners, providers, Health and Wellbeing Boards, and partners in the public sector, and meet the challenges of addressing health inequalities within their own environment.

What can Healthy Places, Healthy Lives offer you?

Healthy Places, Healthy Lives is a combination of online learning activities available to you for 12 months.  Any number of people within a partnership may access these, either from the office or at home, removing  the need to travel, saving you time and money, and cutting down on your carbon footprint.

Additional modules, tailored to your partnership's local requirements, are also available.

Healthy Places, Healthy Lives (HPHL) mapping tool

The NHS location intelligence mapping tool is both intuitive and functionally rich, enabling experienced analysts and ‘non-technical’ users alike to produce complex mapping in minutes, including:

  • labelled pins
  • heat mapping and boundaries
  • rapid visualisation and dissemination of a wide range of multiple datasets.

By identifying and utilising additional datasets (eg, street level crime, population and retail locations) to enhance the local picture, it becomes possible to quickly understand what good (and not so good) looks like. This gives the capability to more easily and quickly identify potential ‘causes of the causes’ of specific and localised health related issues.

Email healthyplaces@institute.nhs.uk for more information on the mapping package and how you can access it.

Healthy Places, Healthy Lives and NHS Live

Healthy Places, Healthy Lives (HPHL) and NHS Live at the NHS Institute are working together to help HPHL support public sector partnerships in their challenge to reduce health inequalities and improve population health.

NHS Live is the NHS Institute's free, national learning network with a membership of over 11,000 frontline enthusiasts, innovators and improvers from across the NHS.

The NHS Live online project database of frontline innovation and improvement projects is searchable by keyword and region and provides NHS Live members with:

  • a source of potential solutions to issues they are facing
  • an opportunity to promote and share ideas, knowledge and experience
  • inspiration from other frontline NHS staff to innovate
  • an easy to access way to engage with the NHS Institute and its products.

Projects undertaken by the HPHL pilot partnerships will soon be featured on the NHS Live project directory.
