Briefly describe what it is
The Intention is to promote normal childbirth safely and reduce caesarean section rate while improving quality of care to women accessing maternity services, offering informed choices while reducing associated morbidity
An opportunity arose with NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement to support the team to review this area of work and empower the team to challenge and apply best practice.
We explored
-Current culture of the service
-Current Guidelines to support normality and vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC) to apply best practice
-Information available for women to support women's choice
-Current knowledge of staff regarding long term effects of caesarean section.

Key action was to focus on debriefing women who have undergone caesarean section and advise vaginal birth for the next pregnancy and learn lessons from other units.

Impact on quality of care is ultimately women will receive support from all staff to optimize control and choice of normal birth.
Midwives will be empowered to proactivelysupport and promote vaginal births and be able to challenge and audit practices. Increased normality will improve job satisfaction and staff retention.

Reduction in costs is identifiable as caesarean section reduced by 2.2% for 2009
Cost per uncomplicated caesarean section £1415 x 10 a month = £14,150
minus cost per normal delivery = overall saving of £820 per case
Average in patient stay reduced by 1day =£2,630 month
Total annual savings £101,030
