The NHS Institute closed on 31 March 2013. This website is being maintained in the short term so that registered users can download documents and view videos (but webinars are no longer available). A number of key resources will transfer to the NHS Improving Quality’s website. Once this website is closed you'll be able to see all publicly available content on The National Archives website: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/*/http://institute.nhs.uk.

Please note that from May 1st 2013 the ability to order our hard copy materials will be temporarily suspended as we finalise the closedown of the NHS Institute and complete the transition to NHS Improving Quality (part of NHS England). It is currently anticipated that many of the materials will be passed onto NHS England and should become available again later this year.

Further messages on its future will be posted here over the coming weeks.

New appointments to lead creation of the NHS Leadership Academy

Thursday, 14 July 2011

Following his recent appointment as Director General of Workforce, Jan Sobieraj has appointed a team of three to replace him as Director of Leadership and the former Deputy Director of Leadership in the Workforce Directorate at the Department of Health, Steve Collins.

The team will lead the creation of the new NHS Leadership Academy and maintain momentum on current programmes.

Richard Jeavons is Director of Leadership, Karen Lynas takes up post as Head of Programmes, and Charles Lister becomes Head of Policy.

Richard will lead the team while continuing his roles as Chief Executive of the Independent Reconfiguration Panel and as Senior Partner at NHS Interim Management and Support (NHS IMAS).  Richard was previously Director for Implementation of the National Programme for IT, and Chief Executive at Sheffield Children's Hospital Trust, Lincolnshire Health Authority, Sheffield Health Authority and West Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority.

Karen will be responsible for delivery of all programmes and will also retain direct responsibility for the Top Leaders programme.   Following several senior management roles in provider organisations, she spent three years as Director of Leadership at the King’s Fund, before returning to the NHS to create the NHS Top Leaders scheme - the development, talent management and internal executive search service for the 800 most senior leaders in the NHS.
Charles Lister was senior business manager for the former DG of Workforce.  Previously, he was Head of Policy at the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, taking forward a number of key policy initiatives, including strategic planning for the implementation of the EU Directive on Tissues and Cells and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008, and Head of Blood Policy in DH.

Commenting on the appointments, Jan Sobieraj said:  “We are adopting a three-at-the-top model, which is designed to ensure a constancy of purpose and to maintain momentum on programmes, while we set up the new NHS Leadership Academy announced by the Secretary of State on July 5th. This is a team of leadership development experts, ideally placed to drive the creation of the new NHS Leadership Academy and its programmes.”
