Improvement Tools

Improvement Tools

There are a wide range of practical service improvement tools that are used to aid implementation of the modules. Many tools identified have been used extensively in general practice and other healthcare environments to help clinicians achieve change. Some of these will be available via an e-learning process.

Back office functions provide an essential service to all of the practice team, supporting clinical staff to ensure a high quality service provision for patients. This module will help you to refine your administrative processes to improve efficiency, organise your administration space to remove waste, standardise administration processes and reduce re-work and duplication. It will also provide you with a better understanding of back office roles and responsibilities.

Referrals

Referrals

There are two elements in this module: internal referral process and clinical decision making process. It will enable the team to introduce a process for clinicians to look together at variation of referral rates within the practice, guiding them toward common principles – and will also highlight whether the internal referral process has its own variations (how the system is used by the referrers in the practice and secretarial team) and how inefficiencies can be reduced.

Front of House

Front of house Your ‘front of house’ reception and waiting areas are the ‘shop window’ for patients, family members, prospective employees or any other visitors. This module will help practice staff to make changes that will not only improve their working environment, but also ensure a much better experience for patients, whether they are receiving reception services or just waiting for their appointment.

Consultation

Consultation

Clinical consultation is the part of the process in general practice that patients and clinicians often feel adds most value to them. This module works to ensure that consultations are provided by the most appropriate clinician and are carried out unhindered. This module also provides the opportunity for clinicians to assess the variation in session/surgery and consultation times.

Prescriptions

Prescriptions

This module has two key themes - the first to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of your repeat prescription process. The second theme is how you approach clinical decision making and work towards agreeing common principles for prescribing to be shared across the practice. It will help to identify what good prescribing looks like and how you can transform the way you review prescribing data.

Shaping Our Future Practice

Shaping Our Future Practice

This is a redesign and practice planning module, for those practices who recognise that they will need to think differently about how they deliver services in the future and redesign the way the whole practice works. It will help practices understand the opportunities in delivering services differently, and identify and quantify resources, skills, capacity needed to do this. The practice can then decide how they will implement these changes.
