NHS Live Award programme update
NHS LIVE AWARD PROGRAMME UPDATE
Our programme for the three NHS Live Award finalists comes to an end this month, so this issue of the newsletter brings you an update on the finalist projects and the work we've been doing with them to promote and share their good practice. The NHS Live Award recognised projects with the potential to be replicated by other NHS organisations.
ACUTE VISITING SCHEME - WINNERS
Project background - The consortium United League Commissioning led by GP Dr Shikha Pitalia identified that many patients requiring urgent medical attention during surgery hours could be saved from an unnecessary visit to hospital if seen quickly at home by a GP.
Activity update - On Friday 5 March, the Acute Visiting Scheme team took part in the NHS North West Commissioning event, run by the NHS Institute's Commissioning team for the SHA. It was attended by commissioners and clinicians. Dr Pitalia and her colleague from the PCT, Eugene Lavan, gave the delegates an insight into how the scheme was set up, the critical success factors and the lessons learnt.
Two films have been created about the scheme, one capturing the patient’s experience the other capturing the story from the PBC and PCT perspective. To find out about the winning project click here.
NHS Institute Chief Executive Bernard Crump said: "Where there is strong clinical leadership and where PBCs and PCTs work effectively together the results can be incredible, leading to much better outcomes for patients as well as greater efficiency. The Acute Visiting Scheme is one example of this in action."
NON-MEDICALLY LED PHARMACOLOGICAL STRESS SERVICE - FINALIST
Project background - In order to ensure that patients had the swiftest possible access to non-invasive heart stressing procedures, this team at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust devised a training programme to enable non-medical staff to undertake the procedure.
The results have been outstanding. Many more patients have been seen, the waiting list has plummeted from 42 to two weeks and doctors’ time has been freed up
Activity update - On Wednesday last week, the Leicester team hosted an event at the Walkers Stadium. Seventy delegates from across England were able to hear about the critical success factors that enabled the team to succeed and the challenges it faced.
97% of feedback forms rated the event overall as good or excellent. Comments on what delegates had found useful included:
MIDHURST MACMILLAN SPECIALIST PALLIATIVE CARE SERVICE – FINALIST
Project background - When faced with closure this team turned their inpatient unit into a 'virtual' hospice, caring for patients in community settings. Patients with life-limiting disease (not just cancer) now receive specialist palliative care in their own homes, nursing or residential homes or community hospitals.
This radical change enables many more patients to choose their preferred place of care and death. It has also delivered huge cost savings to the local NHS.
Activity update - The Midhurst team are currently attending a series of meetings at local GP surgeries throughout Surrey, West Sussex and Hampshire to share information about the service and create greater awareness and understanding of its benefits.
A factsheet about the service has also been created to inform GPs and commissioners about the service and the positive outcomes it has had. The Midhurst team has also been working with us to create features and case studies about the service.
After one of the practice meetings Dr Peter Hargreaves commented:
“I have just come from our second GP Practice meeting and they are delighted that we came to them, and were very interested in learning about the project overall. I think the face-to-face and personalised data for their practice was much appreciated. All our staff have been delighted with the professionalism and support we have received from the NHS Institute team - it really has added impetus and enabled us to maintain the enthusiasm necessary to keep driving forward.”
