Board members

Profiles of the Chair, Executive Directors and Non-executive Directors of the NHS Institute are summarised below. 


Tony ButterworthProfessor Tony Butterworth - Acting Chair of the board

Professor Tony Butterworth was appointed Acting Chair of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement following Dame Yve Buckland's departure in December 2011. Prof Butterworth holds the position of Emeritus Professor of Health Care Workforce Innovation at the University of Lincoln. He is a registered general and mental health nurse and has had an extensive career in Higher Education. He was Professor, Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Manchester and most recently he was WDC Chief Executive in the NHS East Midlands.

As a Non-executive Director of the NHS Institute since July 2005, Tony has been Chair of the Remuneration Committee, the lead Non-executive Director for the health professions and has worked to promote The Productive Series. He has also been a point of reference for the work stream on ‘Innovation and Improvement’ modules and has acted as a link with the University sector. He has supported the Safer Care programme and has helped to develop the NHS Institute’s Improvement Faculty.

As well as his work with the NHS Institute, Prof Butterworth is also Chair of the Foundation for Nursing Studies, Trustee to the charity Dementia UK and Visiting Professor to the University of Maribor in Slovenia and the University of Western Sydney, Australia.  

Non-executive Directors

Carol BlackProfessor Dame Carol Black - Non-executive Director

Dame Carol is the National Director for Health and Work, Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and Chair of the Nuffield Trust. She joined the Board as a Non-Executive Director for a four year term on 15 February 2006 and was reappointed for a further four year terms in February 2010. She acts as an ambassador with key medical groups on behalf of the NHS Institute.

 


Mike DeeganMike Deegan CBE - Non-executive Director

Mike is Chief Executive of Central Manchester & Manchester Children's University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is currently a member of the National Leadership Network and chairs its programme of work on local hospitals. Throughout 2003/04 he chaired the Modernisation Agency Steering Group on behalf of the National Modernisation Board. Prior to his current appointment, he was Chief Executive of North Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust and led the merger of Warrington and Halton Hospitals. 
 

 

Joe Liddane Joe Liddane - Non-executive Director

Joe Liddane, a trained chartered accountant, brings over 30 years experience in financial advisory and management consultancy roles to the post and is currently Managing Director of Setanta Performance, a performance improvement company.  He also has experience of the NHS in his role as Chair of the Whittington Hospital Trust.  Joe is Chair of the NHS Institute's Audit and Risk Management Committee.

 


Noorzaman RashidNoorzaman Rashid - Non-executive Director

Noorzaman Rashid joined the NHS Institute Board as a Non-executive Director on 1st October 2007 for a four-year period. He works for Harvey Nash, a global professional services, IT and Recruitment business where he leads the Government, public sector and leadership services practices.

Noorzaman brings significant board level experience to the NHS Institute from across the public and private sectors. He has a deep understanding of the talent issues market and organisational transformation. His international consulting experience includes work in Russia, South Africa and Japan. Noorzaman is also a board member of the University of Middlesex, The British Edutrust Foundation and is Chair of the Public Services Management Network.

He has a background in government, having worked for the Local Government between 1988 and 1998, for the City of Bradford Council and Coventry City Council.  Noorzaman is Chair of the NHS Institute Worldwide shadow board.  

 

Richard ColleyRichard Colley - Non-executive Director

Richard Colley is a senior corporate finance specialist with wide commercial experience in a range of industries. He has a dynamic track record of leading, changing and driving growth and profits in businesses and is an expert in new ventures and contract negotiations. His recent roles include Group Commercial Finance Director at LINPAC Group Limited, Group Finance Director at Clearview Traffic Group Limited and CFO at TSEU Group. Richard attends the Audit and Risk Management Committee meetings. 
 
Executive Directors

Julian Nettel.jpgJulian Nettel - Interim Managing Director

Julian is an experienced senior leader with a recent distinguished career of achievement in a number of demanding NHS teaching and acute hospital leadership roles.
 
Before joining the NHS Institute in July 2011, he was Interim Director of Leading for Health at NHS London between November 2009 and May 2010 - a new start up responsible for leadership development and talent management for the NHS in London.
 
Julian was formerly Chief Executive of Barts and The London NHS Trust and prior to that St Mary's NHS Trust in Paddington, London. 
 


Rod Anthony 2010.jpgRod Anthony - Acting Director of Corporate Services and Finance

Rod qualified as a chartered accountant in 1985 and following this worked for Reuters Plc and held a number of senior financial roles at Glaxo Pharmaceuticals UK Ltd.  During his time at Glaxo, Rod spend 12 months on secondment to NW Thames Regional Health Authority, working on the roll out of GP fundholding.

In 1995, Rod joined the Forensic Science Service (FSS) as Finance Director and led its transition to a government owned company.

Rod first worked with the NHS Institute in August 2007, setting up its international business and establishing a series of commercial pilots.  He became Acting Director of Finance in August 2008 and took over responsibility for Corporate Services in November 2009.  Rod is also Non-executive Director and Deputy Chair at Solihull Care Trust.


Dr Helen BevanDr Helen Bevan OBE - Chief of Service Transformation

Over the past 15 years Helen has led change initiatives at local and national level which have created improvements for millions of patients.  Her current role is to keep NHS improvement knowledge fresh, relevant, impactful at the leading edge. She holds a first degree in social science, an MBA and a doctorate from Henley Management College.
