The NHS Institute closed on 31 March 2013. This website is being maintained until the end of June 2013 so that registered users can download documents and view videos (but webinars are no longer available). Once this website is closed you'll be able to see all publicly available content on The National Archives website: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/*/http://institute.nhs.uk.

Please note that from May 1st 2013 the ability to order our hard copy materials will be temporarily suspended as we finalise the closedown of the NHS Institute and complete the transition to NHS Improving Quality (part of NHS England). It will still be possible to download publications until this website closes, which is projected to be at the end of June 2013. It is currently anticipated that many of the materials will be passed onto NHS England and should become available again later this year.

Further messages on its future will be posted here over the coming weeks.

Increasing Day Case Rates for Emergency Care (Ambulatory Emergency Care)
Using quarter 1 2010 Secondary Uses Service data, the  Corrected q11011 statins dataset available (82.44 KB) will help acute provider trusts and PCTs understand the current level of delivery of ambulatory emergency care and what the remaining potential is for increased ambulatory management. The NHS Institute published a 'How to Implement Ambulatory Emergency Care Guide' in October 2010.

Better Care, Better Value indicators

If every organisation (provider and commissioner) improved its performance to match that of the top quartile in each Better Care, Better Value (BCBV) indicator, NHS England could realise £2.4 billion in productivity benefits.

The Better Care, Better Value indicators reveal the potential to make significant cash or resource savings whilst improving quality. However, the key issue is what has to be done to actually realise the benefits. For this reason we have introduced the 'Converting the potential into reality' guides - one is aimed at NHS commissioners and the other is for provider organisations. These guides contain ten steps that commissioners/providers can take to use the BCBV indicators to maximum effect to improve quality and increase productivity.
